If you are planning to go to your first wine tasting (or even if you’ve been before), you may be wondering what the rules are so you can enjoy your experience and get a great bottle of your new favorite wine. Here are a few wine tasting etiquette rules that will help you have a better experience overall:
- Don’t Wear Perfume/Cologne – While you may be tasting wine, your sense of smell may be the primary thing that helps you choose the wines you like best. If your sniffer is overwhelmed with opposing scents, you may not have as successful an experience.
- Leave the Terminology at Home – Whether you are a wine connoisseur or not, discussing the technique of making wine while you are in the tasting room could be a faux pas. Take time to enjoy what you taste, ask your wine professional questions about their wines, and leave the conversation for other topics.
- Don’t Fake It – If you aren’t a wine industry professional – that’s really okay. Most of the people coming to a wine tasting may have little to no experience tasting different wines. It’s okay to learn what you like without feeling like you have to know everything before you walk in the door.
- Don’t Haggle – If you are at a wine tasting as a guest, don’t haggle the price of the wine! Your winery has priced their wines according to the industry standards at the time, and it’s more important to enjoy your experience than worry over the price. Buy what you like, and don’t buy what you don’t like.
